The Sun has Set on the Cross Border Challenge, A Bright New Run on the Horizon

Posted by  On March 31, 2019

After marking its 10th anniversary with a special medal in 2018 the Cumberland Y Service Club has decided it is time to come up with a bright new run to replace the Cross Border Challenge for 2019.

“It was time for a refresh,” says Kent Leslie, co-chair of the race committee. “We decided as a committee that although the Cross Border Challenge was successful in the past, we wanted to introduce something new and exciting to the runners who have supported the run, as well as the hope of recruiting new runners.”

The Cumberland Y Service Club is pleased to announce that the Run for the Sun will take place June 22, 2019 and include, a 3K, 5K, 10K and half marathon. This new race will have a new course, new medal and other new additions that the committee will be releasing over the next few months. One thing that has not changed, however, is the commitment made by Archway Insurance to be the presenting sponsor of Run for the Sun.

“We have been very grateful to Archway Insurance for the presenting sponsorship and volunteering they have done for the Cross Border Challenge over the last six years,” says Terry MacDonald, Race Co-director. “Their continued support is one of the big factors in us continuing to have a run.”

The run will be organized by the Cumberland Y Service Club race committee, co-chaired by Terry MacDonald and Kent Leslie. The same committee that organized the Cross Border Challenge for 10 successful years, with Archway Insurance being the presenting sponsor for six of those years.

Michael Stack, CEO of Archway Insurance comments, “It has been our pleasure as a member of the Cumberland County business community to support the Cross Border Challenge, now Run for the Sun, and the Y Service Club over the past six years. Anytime we have an opportunity to support a great community organization like the YMCA, while at the same time promoting healthy living, engaging in team building and encouraging volunteerism within our own organization, it’s a definite win-win”, says Michael Stack, CEO of Archway Insurance.

“Today is about thanking Archway Insurance for their long time support.” says committee member Trina Clarke. “This is a big undertaking every year and without our sponsors, volunteers and support from the running community it could not happen.”

Run for the Sun will be one of the main events in the Summer Kick Off weekend from June 20-23. The weekend kicks off with Dayle’s Grand Market on Thursday, June 20, 2019, and will be accompanied by several events led by community groups, the Town of Amherst, YMCA of Cumberland and the Cumberland Y Service Club.

“We will of course be bringing back the band ‘Big Fish’ for the Saturday night Beer Garden”, says Kent Leslie.  “They are very popular, bringing in more than 500 people last year and they always put on a great show.”

Bill Schurman, Director of Recreation for the Town of Amherst is also looking forward to the weekend of events. “The YMCA, the Y Service Club, its members & partners play a pivotal role in the goal of being the most active healthy community in NS. We are excited to collaborate with ‘A Summer Kickoff & the Run for the Sun. Events & Initiatives such as this add to community spirit and pride while demonstrating to visitors who participate, what a great community this is to Live, Work & Play.”

Online registration is available online through the Running Room or Race Roster. In-person registration forms will be available at the YMCA of Cumberland by March 8th.

All proceeds from the events go back to the community, with a portion donated to the YMCA of Cumberland Strong Kids Campaign, Amherst Little League and youth scholarships.

The Amherst Y’s Men’s Club was chartered in 1962 and has been an important part of the YMCA and community since that time. In 2009 the club changed their name to the Cumberland Y Service Club to reflect who we are and what we do – men and women serving the YMCA of Cumberland and our community.
